Joan of Arc

WALT: Research a saint.

This week we had to research a saint. Me and my friend Kate focused on Saint Joan Of Arc. We did some digging around in the internet and found out that she was pretty cool. She is a war heroine and lead the French army to a amazing victory. She went from a peasant girl to a war hero.

What is your favourite Saint and why?

Eco trip

WALT: write a report on a school event.

On Friday the year five and six students got to go on a trip to the Bromley rubbish centre to learn about recycling and compost and no it did not smell bad like everyone thinks. At first we learned about the perfect compost recipe.

Brown  (eg. leafs, hay.)

water

green (grass,weeds,food scrapes)

Microbes (dirt)

Air (poke some wholes in the compost)

warmth (blanket on top, sun)

That order is the perfect recipe to hot compost. We got to make some compost using that recipe and it will take up to a year to break down.

Next we learned about worms and worm bins and how to make bedding for them. Worm bedding is newspaper dipped in water and squeezed out, when you have done that you lay it on top of all the dirt and stuff in the worm bin. The worms eat and sleep in it, which when you think about it is pretty weird.

After we did all the stuff with the worms we learned about how to recycle properly and about which kind of plastics can go in the recycling and which can not.

It was super fun and improved our knowledge about looking after the environment.

The Dumb Ducks

 WALT: add speech bubbles.

Today we had a photo of lots of ducks and we had to add speech bubbles to them to make them seem like they were talking. I really enjoyed this because I could make them say whatever I wanted.

Here are my dumb ducks

The great Kate Weathermachine

 WALT: Use google draw.

Today everyone in my class had each choose an image and trace over it in google drawing. we used tools ¨curved line & ploy-line to get the correct shapes. I did Kate Weatherall, from the mysterious benedict society, Which in my opinion is the best  book and TV series of all time.

Equity

WALT: To learn what is fair and what is equity.

Today my teacher was teaching us about equity. He gave use each a slip of paper with an injury on it. Next he asked if we thought it was severe or a normal thing. Mine was sore throat but other people might have a broken back or something like that. Then my teacher told us to line up so he could give us our treatment. We all got one plaster. For some peoples injury's that would have been good  but for people with other  people with worst injury´s it would be not enough. I enjoyed this activity because we got to do stuff off our chromebooks.

Mazed Maths question

WALT: identify the equation and solve

Today my teacher gave as a maths question to work on. I found this quite easy. It was also a little boring because you just had to do a maths question.

Here are my answers.

Miss Pownall travels 8 kms to school and 8 kms home each school day.

How far does she travel each week?

8x5=40

2x40=80

80km

Do you like maths?

Awesome Art

WALT: Art takes many forms.

Recently my class has been learning  about art. I really like learning about art because art is something that I am interested in. Today for art we had to find a piece of art in our house that we liked and answer some questions about it. My piece of art that I choose was some weaving that my mums friend made for her.

Here it is.

Do you have a favourite artist?

Cute Cactus

WALT: use the figures of speech from the week

This week in writing we have been working on things like hyperboles, similes and alliteration. Today we had to write a story with all those things in it. My story was all about a cactus named Prickly who sits on a shelf in his humans house.

Here it is.

The life of A cactus

Hello my name is Prickly, I am a cactus. I live on a shelf in my servants house and I am as prickly as… well a cactus. All the other plants won't come near me because they are scared I will prick them. But believe it or not there are perks about being a cactus. For example, I can store lots of water in a short time so I don't have to ever say I am dying of thirst. I can also live for ages, my great granddad Spike lived till he was 300. But there are downsides to being a cactus, like if I am placed in the wrong place I can bring bad feng shui

(don´t ask what that is, I have no idea).  I think I am a very crafty and clever cactus because I can figure out how to get a whole shelf to myself. I can not tell you how though, it is a secret. Being a cactus is sort of boring sometimes so I have realised that there is no point in writing a book, Bye.

What is your favourite plant?

Awesome Enclosure

WALT: Reflect on our reading and relate to self.

Recently my class has been learning about zoos. Today we had to pretend we were an alien making an enclosure for a human. At first I hated this because it was sort of like making a space for a human to be trapped, but then I realised that I could basically make my own dream room. I would just like to say that I would most definitely live in the room I made.

Here it is.

What would be in your dream room?

The life of Jesus

WALT: understand the life story of Jesus.

Today I did a google drawing with pictures of Jesus´s life from start to finish. I found this activity easy and fun I guess. I think I may have gotten a few moments in his life mixed up, but not to much.

Here it is.

Are you familiar with the life of Jesus?

Being Reliable

 WALT: to be grateful.

This week my class is learning about being Reliable, we had to make google drawing about being reliable by showing us doing our jobs. I sort of liked this activity but you had to take photos of you doing them which meant we had to actually do the jobs 😕. Here is my google drawing about me being reliable by doing my jobs.

What jobs do you have to do?

THE BEST DAY EVER

WALT: To write a report about personal experience.

Today Emma Twigg came to my school. She came and told us about her training and the Olympics she also told us about her struggles through her career. It was really cool. She let us hold the medal, it was quite heavy. We asked lots of questions, my question was ¨what does your daily training routine look like?¨ She has to do 5 hours of rowing everyday😮

Do you ever want to go to the Olympics someday?

: it ends all of a sudden

The Hermes

Walt: to take information and put it into our writing

I really enjoyed doing this. I hope you like my article about Emma Twigg. I really enjoyed doing this. My class did the start and then we had to carry on.  The Hermes is a newspaper that I made up.

THE HERMES

Emma Advances - By Room 1

Emma Twigg, serial Olympian, advanced to the semi finals with a convincing win in the Quarter finals last

Sunday in Tokyo.

This is Emma’s fourth Olympics and her fourth time advancing to the Semi finals. In Rio she placed fourth

by less than a second and she has returned reinvigorated by the culture in the NZ team and she says

‘it’s an honour wearing the Silver Fern’. She also has had expert coaching tips from her nephew who said

she needs to train harder. After this advice she pushed herself to row over 26km daily which she told him

from Tokyo.

She is a single sculler and has been a world champion in the last 10 years. She is one of the favourites to

win, she has the fastest time in her heats so far. Her fastest time in Tokyo is 7.35min. She has come 4th

in all of her Olympics.

We are all hoping she wins the gold medal for NZ.

70s music

WALT: Learn about music through the ages.

Recently for music through the ages we have been looking at the sweet tunes of the 70s. We have found some goodies. We each had to choose 2. My two are Highway to hell by ACDC and Dancing Queen by abba. I really enjoyed this.

What is your favourite old song?

Winter Sports

Today for winter sports we played hockey against Banks Ave who absolutely steam rolled us, 7-0.  But after we bet South Brighton  7-0. They played really well. I really enjoyed Hockey today because my Aunty soph and my Granddad were coaching. Our team played very well and I am looking forward to next week.

Do you play any sports?

Refugee day

WALT: Experience like it is like to be a refugee.

On Monday the senior school went to the red zone for the morning, we went and did some activity's based on what it was like to be a refugee. Refugees are people who have lost their homes and are on the run. First we split up into our house groups, I was in pompallier. The first activity was when our teacher blew a whistle  and we had to hide. The second activity was when we played a game when we  had partners and one of us was blindfolded and the other person had to guide us through cones. The third activity was when we had to decipher things in Mandarin.  The forth activity was when we had to eat rice.  It was... not very filling. The fifth and final activity was shelter building.  It was a really fun day and I really enjoyed it.  Have you ever made a shelter before?

The ugly truth of food.

WALT: Make good food choices and identify everyday and occasional foods.

On Tuesday Room 1 went to the supermarket for health, we met a lady called Brittany there, she had been teaching us about everyday foods and occasional foods the day before. Now it was time to put our skills to the test. We had groups of 4 or 5 with a parent help. We had different categories for different food choices. We had to find everyday and occasional food choices. To be regular it had to have certain amounts of thing in it.
Some foods have so much sugar its crazy.
I liked learning about occasional foods and everyday foods.
Guess how many teaspoons of sugar there is in a 2.5 litre bottle of coke?

Kawa of Care

WALT: Agree to the terms of the Kawa of Care.

I had to say yes to the terms of the Kawa of care. The Kawa of care is a thing that you agree to sign when you get your school Chromebook. Today we had to do some work about it. Here is the work.
